Beacon Cymru is proud to announce the imminent completion of Big Shed, Tonypandy, a transformational regeneration development that will bring new homes, commercial premises and significant social value to the heart of the Rhondda.
Developed in partnership with Willis Construction, Welsh Government and Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, the project represents a major investment in the future of Tonypandy, creating a vibrant mixed-use development designed to serve the community for generations to come.
Transforming a Key Site in Tonypandy
As one of the most significant regeneration developments in the area, Big Shed has transformed a prominent brownfield site into a thriving new neighbourhood and commercial destination.
The completed development will provide:
- 51 high-quality, sustainable new homes
- 8 accessible homes for adults with disabilities
- 11,000 sq ft of commercial space to support local businesses and create employment opportunities
- Significant social value benefits for residents and the wider community
The scheme has been carefully designed to address local housing needs while encouraging economic growth and supporting long-term community wellbeing.
Delivering Much-Needed Homes
At the heart of the development are 51 modern, energy-efficient homes that will provide high-quality housing in Tonypandy. These homes have been designed with sustainability, comfort and affordability in mind, helping to meet growing demand for quality housing across the Rhondda Cynon Taf region.
In addition, the development includes eight purpose-built accessible homes for adults with disabilities, ensuring more inclusive living options and supporting independent living within the local community.
Supporting Economic Growth and Local Businesses
Alongside the residential accommodation, Big Shed delivers 11,000 square feet of commercial space, creating new opportunities for businesses to establish and grow within Tonypandy.
The commercial element of the development is expected to attract investment, support entrepreneurship and create jobs, contributing to the ongoing regeneration and economic resilience of the town centre.
By combining housing and commercial uses within a single development, Big Shed has created a sustainable environment where people can live, work and access services close to home.
Creating Lasting Social Value
Beyond the physical transformation of the site, the project has generated significant social value throughout its delivery:
- 544 apprenticeship weeks provided
- 56 work placement weeks completed
- 40 community projects supported
- 39 educational sessions delivered across 8 local schools
- 5 careers events supported
Working closely with partners and stakeholders, Beacon has ensured that the development delivers wider benefits for the local community, supporting economic activity, creating opportunities and contributing to the long-term prosperity of the area.
The project demonstrates the positive impact that collaborative regeneration can have when public and private sector organisations work together towards a shared vision.
Looking Ahead
With completion now in sight, we are excited to welcome new residents and businesses to Big Shed soon.
This landmark development marks an important milestone in Tonypandy’s regeneration journey and highlights what can be achieved through partnership, innovation and a commitment to creating thriving communities.
