Beacon Cymru is delighted to celebrate the successful retention of the Green Flag Award at Mount Pleasant Hospital, Swansea, marking the fourth consecutive year that the site has achieved the internationally-recognised benchmark for high-quality green spaces. It’s a testament to the hard work and ongoing commitment of Beacon’s in-house estates team that looks after this site.

The award, administered in Wales by Keep Wales Tidy with support from the Welsh Government, recognises parks and green spaces that meet the highest standards of environmental management, cleanliness, safety, accessibility and community value. This year, a record-breaking 330 parks and green spaces across Wales met the criteria, up from 315 in 2025.

This latest achievement reinforces Mount Pleasant Hospital’s reputation as one of Swansea’s most valued green environments and highlights Beacon’s ongoing commitment to creating places that support health, wellbeing, biodiversity and community pride.

A Green Flag Success Story in Swansea

Located in the heart of Swansea, Mount Pleasant Hospital has become a shining example of how thoughtfully-managed green spaces can enhance both the environment and quality of life for residents.

Since first achieving Green Flag status in 2022, the site has consistently demonstrated the high standards required to retain the award year after year. The original award recognised Mount Pleasant Hospital as one of a record number of Welsh green spaces meeting the stringent Green Flag criteria.

Now, four years on, the continued recognition reflects the dedication invested in maintaining an attractive, welcoming and sustainable environment that residents can enjoy throughout the year.

What Is the Green Flag Award?

The Green Flag Award is recognised internationally as the quality standard for parks and green spaces. The scheme celebrates sites that are welcoming, safe, well maintained and environmentally sustainable, while delivering clear benefits for the communities they serve.

In Wales, sites are assessed against rigorous criteria, including:

  • A welcoming place
  • Healthy, safe and secure environments
  • Cleanliness and maintenance
  • Sustainability and environmental management
  • Biodiversity conservation
  • Community involvement and engagement
  • Effective management and future planning

Achieving Green Flag status demonstrates that a site ranks among the very best green spaces in the country.

Supporting Wellbeing Through Quality Green Space

Green spaces play a vital role in supporting physical and mental wellbeing. Research consistently shows that access to high-quality outdoor environments can encourage physical activity, reduce stress, improve social connections and help people feel more connected to nature.

Keep Wales Tidy has repeatedly highlighted the importance of accessible green spaces in improving health outcomes and creating stronger, more resilient communities.

At Mount Pleasant Hospital, the award-winning landscape contributes significantly to the quality of the living environment, providing residents with attractive outdoor spaces that promote wellbeing and encourage community interaction.

Protecting Biodiversity and Enhancing the Environment

A key aspect of the Green Flag Award is environmental stewardship. Sites must demonstrate a commitment to sustainability and biodiversity, ensuring that green spaces continue to thrive while supporting local wildlife and natural habitats.

The continued success of Mount Pleasant Hospital reflects the careful management of the site’s open spaces by Beacon’s Estates Team, helping to create a greener and more environmentally sustainable community while maintaining the highest standards for residents.
